Ten favourites of 2013

Okay, so this year I’ve seen over 70 productions, from Edinburgh to the West End, and of course in Cardiff at my two theatres/second homes. It’s always really hard to choose a top ten so these are just ten of my favourites, ones to check out if they ever tour (in my humble opinion), no hierarchy, just ones that have left an impression…

Missing Gecko theatre – beautiful and effortless, a real highlight of the Edinburgh Fringe which everybody needs to check out.

Matilda RSC – amazing production, cleverly designed set and something to reassure me that it’s okay that when I grow up I will eat sweets everyday! My new favourite musical!

Something very far away Unicorn – there were definitely tears from every adult in the audience, incredible puppetry and live story telling – stunning production.

1984 Headlong theatre – brilliantly staged, first class production leaving several audience members a little shaken!

Titus Andronicous Hiraeth Artistic Productions – powerful, emotive Shakespeare with a This is England twist: the talk of the venue!

Who’s afraid of Rachel Roberts? Torch Theatre Company – proving that you don’t need a huge ensemble or a flashy set, emotive one woman show cleverly portrayed and directed.

Womb with a view Pinkanoe theatre company – my feel good show of the summer, full of belly laughs, 90s love and the classic B*witched dance routine

Luna Theatr Iolo and Theatre Hullabulloo – this collaboration have produced a brilliant example of magical children’s theatre – beautifully designed and performed!

Much ado about nothing Shitfaced Shakespeare – one of the most hilarious evenings in Edinburgh, something which should never work but is really pure genius; one drunk actor trying to perform Shakespeare!

And finally, Corina Pavlova and the Lions Roar Sherman Cymru – a wonderfully festive show which has the little-ones roaring and ‘tuning’ their ears with the biggest grins on their faces! Beautiful costumes, performances and music throughout!

And that’s ten! And tomorrow is Christmas eve, I have five more viewings of our Christmas shows to go until the year is out and I’ve already got a hitlist for the start of the new year – Once, The Play That Goes Wrong, The Curious Incident, The Harri Parri’s: The Big Day and Shop of Little Horrors to name a few!

But for now, have a wonderful and merry Christmas everyone, and here’s to 2014! Let’s hope it’s a good one!
